Undercover, sow the seeds on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Cover seed with a light sprinkling of compost or vermiculite and place at a temperature of between 15-20C (59-68F).
When seedlings large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into pots or trays. Then gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm (12in) apart. For best results, grow in any ordinary, well-drained soil in full sun. Overwinter autumn sown plants in a cold frame and plant out the following spring.
Plant in groups of five plants to create a splash of summer colour. Cut plants back in the autumn and they will return the following year.
