Broccoli Seeds

Broccoli is a very British vegetable. They are sturdy plants that produce numerous spears for harvesting from February to April. Once the central head has been removed, this will encourage further smaller spears to be produced from the plant. These can be cut as required and lightly steamed or boiled. For the green sprouting broccoli that you find in supermarkets, take a look at our Calabrese seeds.

Broccoli seeds prefer to be sown and planted in a sunny position, in rich and firm soil, but not in soil that has recently been manured.
Sow seeds from April to May in a well prepared seed bed, at 1.5cm deep. Alternatively, sow the seeds into trays or modules under glass at a temperature of 13°C. Transplant to their final planting positions at 60cm apart, and with 90cm between rows to grow on to maturity. Start harvesting the following spring when the spears have formed, but before the flowers start to open. When growing broccoli, be aware of pests such as slugs, caterpillars and pigeons which can attack your crops. Take a look at our range of pest control and crop protection so your broccoli can reach its full potential!
