Sowing Tomato Seeds in Pots with Andrew Tokely
29 November 2024Watch our tomato grow-along video with Andrew Tokely.
Fill a pot with compost. Sprinkle the tomato seeds into the pot and label with the variety name. Andrew used a whole packet of tomato Shirley. Up to 50 seeds can be sown into a pot, as they will be pricked out and potted on later. Tomato seeds should be covered, so Andrew sprinkled fine grade vermiculite over the top of the seeds rather than compost.
Vermiculite is made from volcanic rock. As it is finer the compost, it can help with germination as it will prevent the seeds being covered too thick, which can easily happen when covering seeds with compost.
The tomato seeds should germinate in approximately 1-2 weeks. When they have germinated, prick them out and transplant them into grow bags, bigger pots or wherever they are to grow.
