Hyacinth Bean (Lablab Bean)

Description

Lablab Bean is a climbing plant grown as an annual, and reaches about 2m in height. The flowers are borne in pretty spikes from white to rich purple. The pod is flat, blunt and slightly curved and is about 10cm long. Can be used fresh or dried, and the leaves are also edible.

The interest in what we have classed liberally as "Oriental Vegetables" increases every year. They can be used raw in salads, or lightly cooked for use in stir frys and numerous Chinese style meals. We hope you will be tempted to give something different a try.

When to Sow Lablab Bean Seeds

April to June

Where to Sow

Early sowings can be made underglass at a temperature of 16°C, sow 3 seeds per 8cm (3in) pot filled with seed sowing compost. Outside sowings can be made from May onwards into the growing site 5cm (2in) deep. Sow 2-3 seeds every 20cm (8in) apart with rows spaced 60cm (24in) apart.

What to do next

Seedlings sown underglass should be gradually hardened off before planting outside in late May to the above spacing, once all risk of frost has past. Provide support by canes or netting for plants to climb. Water regularly during dry weather.

Maturity

July to September

Handy Tip

Sow a few seeds early in large containers under glass for an early crop or sow late summer under glass to extend the cropping season into the autumn.
