Leaf Beet Bright Yellow Chard

Description

Leaf Beet Bright Yellow Chard Seeds

RHS Award

A bright broad leaved chard with stunning bright yellow stems. The leaves are excellent as a baby leaf in salads, and the stems can be eaten as an alternative to celery. At maturity it will produce sweet stalks that are best eaten raw or steamed. If the stalks are over ripe then they can get a slightly bitter taste. Use the leaves like spinach.

When to Sow Bright Yellow Chard Seeds

March to July. Germination can take up to 14 days.

Where to Sow

Sow direct in a well prepared, moist, fertile growing site in full sun or partial shade. Sow seeds thinly at a depth of 2cm (3/4") in drills 35-40cm (14-16") apart. Can also be multi-sown in module cell trays and transplanted to the plot as gaps appear or alternatively these can be grown in pots for the patio. We recommend that the pots are at least 12 inches wide and deep to allow full growth. Bright yellow chard grows best in full sun, but can tolerate some shade.

What to do Next

Thin seedlings to 7cm (3") apart for 'baby leaves' which will be ready to harvest approximately 2 months from sowing. For larger chards/leaves thin to 20cm (8") apart, for mature plants.

Harvest

June to October as baby leaf or mature plants

Handy Tip

Leaves can be used as spinach, lightly cook stem ribs and serve with butter. Adds extra colour as a baby leaf in salads. Protect young seedlings with slug control as necessary.
