There is nothing quite like using your own home grown herbs from your garden to add flavour and vibrance to cooked dishes.

The bright green leaves of French Sorrel have a sharp acidic flavour which is lessended on cooking. It can be used in salads, fish dishes and soups. It will grow to a height of about 60cm.

Where to Sow

Sow seeds underglass 0.5cm (¼") deep, in small trays of compost and lightly cover the seeds with a sprinkling of compost , and place at a temperature of 15C .

What to do next

Prick out seedlings individually to 7cm (3") pots, once large enough to handle. Grow on in cooler conditions , then gradually harden off plants in a cold frame before planting out after risk of frost has passed. Transplant to final positions 30cm (12in) apart or into larger containers . Cut the leaves, as required, a few from each plant so that they will regrow quickly.

July onwards.

Handy Tip

Water regularly during hot weather, grows well in water retentive soil in a sunny or partially shaded position. when cooking sorrel do not use cast iron or aluminium cookware as this can taint the flavour.

Uses

French sorrel can be uesd to make soup or can be cooked like spinach.  Sorrel has a lemony taste.
