Nothing tastes better than using your own freshly grown herbs from your garden to flavour cooked dishes and salads.

Cumin seeds are used in Indian and Oriental cooking, particularly curry type dishes. They can be used whole or ground in a pepper mill. An upright plant with finely cut leaves and small white flowers from July to August. Sow as early as possible as a long growing season is needed.

When to Sow Cumin Seeds

Sow in April into drills.  Cover with fine soil and thin to 15cm apart in May.

Where to Sow

The site should be sunny and sheltered with well-drained, rich soil.

Harvest

Seeds when ripe, usually in September to October as the plant is dying.

Uses

Use seeds whole or ground in cooking. Cumin is an essential ingredient for curry, and many other oriental dishes. Add to meats and pickles to add flavour. The seeds can be ground in a pepper mill.  Cumin is an essential ingredient of chilli powder.

Handy Tip

Sprinkle over roast vegetables to give them a kick and interesting flavour.
