When to Sow Field Beans Seeds

September to end of November.

How to Sow

In rows 5cm deep and 20cm apart.

Growing Time

Over winter.

Soil Type

Prefers heavy soil, but will not tolerate drought or waterlogged land.

Digging In

Dig In before flowering, at least 2 weeks before the next crop. Cut down with a spade if they get too large, but do not forget to leave the nitrogen-rich roots.

Coverage

6 square metres. 1 ROD - 5.5 x 5.5 sq. yds. = 30.25 sq. yds. or 25.3 sq.m.

Comments

A winter green manure such as field beans will attract useful slug predators. Beetles and frogs love the cool, damp conditions. If plants become too large, chop down before digging in.
