Chilli Pepper Scotch Bonnet Red

Description

Scotch Bonnet Chillis are not for the faint hearted as they have a Scoville Heat Unit rating of around 350,000! Although the fruits are small, around 2.5-4cm long and 2-3cm wide, they are very hot and have a strong smell. To help reduce the spice, removing the seeds can help. Often used in Caribbean cooking as they originate from Jamacia. The plants are bushy and reach heights of around 50cm.

When to Sow Scotch Bonnet Red Chilli Pepper Seeds

February to April.

Where to Sow

Sow seed on the surface of a free draining compost in pots or trays and cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite and place at a temperature 18-21°C until seeds germinate. Germinate usually starts within 10-21 days.

What to do next

Prick out seedlings when large enough to handle into 7cm (3in) pots and grow on under glass. Once plants reach 10cm (4in) high transplant into growbags or 25cm (10in) pots and grow on under glass. Feed once a week with tomato fertiliser after first fruits have set.

Harvest

August - September. These are quite late to mature and can take up 100 days.

Handy Tip

Seeds and fruits are extremely hot, handle with care and do not rub eyes during sowing or food preparation. Gloves are recommended when handling seeds and fruits.
We don't recommend growing hot chilli's on a windowsill as they need a constant temperature.

Kings Say

An excellent source of vitamin C and beta carotene.
