How to Grow Lupin Seeds: Lupin seeds are a popular choice for gardeners. Also known as lupinus, these tall, bold and colourful flowers often found in borders. They have unusual flower spikes in a wide range of colours and bi-colours. They are a perfect cottage garden plant. Depending on the variety, if they are hardy perennials or annuals, they usually flower from May to July. These plants love the sun, so sow Lupin seeds in full sun or in partial shade from February to June or again in September. Ensure that the soil is moist yet well drained, and slightly sandy, as these plants will produce long tap roots. They don't grow particularly well in clay or chalky soils as the ground is more compact, making it harder for the roots to develop. Lupins also make brilliant cut flowers.
Take special care when sowing and keep away from children and pets as the seed and plants can be harmful if eaten. Watch out for Lupin aphids, which are sap-sucking insects, as well as slugs and snails. To keep your flowers protected, you may need to think about pest control, such as insect sprays!
