It may be wet and cold outside and the soil too wet to do much in the garden, but at least the days are gradually getting longer, this means February can be a busy month for seed sowing under glass or on a warm windowsill, a job that can be done whatever the weather.

Happy New Year! The start of a new gardening year is always a time to reflect an what worked well last year and to take time to think of what you wish to do better this year and what new plants you may want to grow.

The days are shorter and the weather has turned cooler, with frosty nights and the festive season is around the corner, but there are still a few jobs to get on with in preparation for the festive period and the new season ahead.

November has arrived, along with cooler nights and shorter days. A time for cleaning up gardens and vegetable plots ready for winter, and a time to look at back on successes and failures so you can start planning for next year.

October has arrived, along with Storm Amy and some welcome rain, as the soil was very dry. Once the weather improves there are still plenty of jobs to get on with.

September has arrived, and it is starting to feel like Autumn, especially as the evening draw in giving less daylight hours. September is a busy month bringing in the harvest, getting the ground ready for autumn and planting and preparing for next year’s crops and display.

Last month high temperatures are likely to continue into July, but hopefully with a splash of rain in between to help keep the garden and vegetable plot growing. Many crops will require harvesting this month, but it is also a time to start looking ahead to next year’s display and a few autumn crops.

June has arrived and started with sunshine and showers, the perfect growing weather. This is a busy month planting out for the summer ahead as hopefully any risk of frost should now be long gone.

The weather has been glorious, but please remember the month of May, although warming up, can still have some cold nights and possibilities of night frosts, so please remember to have some fleece ready just in case we get a cold night to protect any of those tender plants that you have been tempted to plant out.

The lighter evenings have arrived and the weather is warming up and the soil is dry, but the nights are still cold. This month there are plenty of jobs to do in our flower and vegetable gardens. Happy Gardening!
