Sweet Corn Seeds

A tender vegetable that needs a good summer to produce at its best. Given a sheltered spot and using early varieties, this delicious vegetable is now quite at home in northern countries. Sweet corn is a good source of vitamin A, B, C and fibre!
Early sowings can be made into pots or modules under glass at 21°C. These can gradually be hardened off in a cold frame before transplanting into the plot, once all risk of frost has passed. Do not transplant in rows, but in blocks with 45cm between each plant. This helps to aid air pollination by wind. Later sowings can be made direct into the growing site from mid-May. Regular watering is important once the cobs start to form. The cobs are ready to be harvested when the tassels or silks at the end turn brown. To check if they are ready, you can ease back some husk and squeeze a kernel to see if the juice is milky. If so, it is ready. Pick as close to cooking time as possible for the sweetest flavoured corn.
