When to Sow

September to April

Where to Sow Claire Elizabeth Sweet Peas

Sowing sweet peas can begin in September through to early April. Our expert Peter Miller recommends that November is the optimum time.
Sow 5 sweet pea seeds into a 3" deep pot using a good growing medium and keep in a cold frame if sowing in October, November and March. Keep the seeds moist and do not let the soil dry out. Chipping and soaking is not necessary.
September and April sowings can be made direct, where they are to flower.  January and February sowings should be kept in a heated glasshouse.

What to do Next

Glasshouse raised sweet pea seedlings should be hardened off prior to planting out in April (weather permitting). Thin direct sown seedlings to 10cm (4") apart. When the plants have grown 3 pairs of true leaves, pinch the tops out to encourage side shoots and more flowers. Feed foilage or soil dressing at fortnightly intervals.

Flowers

Late June to September

Handy Tip

Provide sturdy support for plants. After a good rain a mature plant will be heavy.
