When to Sow Brush Strokes Viola Seeds

February and March or May to September

Where to Sow

Sow the seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Cover with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place at a temperature of between 15-20°C (59-68°F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination which usually takes 14-21 days. Take care not to provide too high a temperature as this can prevent germination.

What to do Next

When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise young plants to outdoor conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost has gone at 23cm (9") apart, or plant in containers. Over winter September sowings in a cold frame, then plant out the following spring.

Flowers

November to September depending on sowing time.

Handy Tip

Add to mixed containers or baskets to create an eye catching display.
