When to Sow Back to Black Viola Seeds

Feb, March or June to September

Flowers

November-September, Depending on sowing time.

Where to Sow

On the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Cover with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place at a temperature between 15-20°C (59-68°F). Do not exclude light as this helps germination which is usually 14-21 days. Too high a temperature can prevent germination.

What to do Next

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, 23cm (9") apart, or plant into containers. Overwinter September sowings in a cold frame then plant out the following spring.

Handy Tip

Ideal for winter and spring displays where the rich colour becomes more intense.
