How to Grow Sweet Peas

Sweet pea planting can begin from September to April. If sowing in September or April, the seeds can be sown direct to the flowering site at 2cm (3/4in) deep. If growing in other months, we recommend pots for sweet peas. Plant 5 seeds in a 7.5cm pot. October, November and March sowings should be kept in a cold frame. January sowings in a heated glasshouse.

When to Plant Sweet Peas Out

Glasshouse raised seedlings should be hardened off during March and planted out direct into the flowering site in April. Pot grown seedlings should be planted out direct in the flowering site 15cm (6") apart. Thin direct sown seedlings to 10cm (4") apart. They will flower from June onwards. Pick the sweet pea flowers regularly to encourage new growth.

Handy Tip

Provide sturdy support for the sweet pea plant as mature plants will become heavy after a good rain.
