Growing sunflowers is very easy to do, which makes them an excellent choice for growing with children and introducing little ones into the gardening world. There are many different sun flower types including traditional yellow varieties, giant sunflowers such as Giant single, dwarf sunflowers, and more unusual types that produce red sunflowers or teddy bear sunflowers!
Some of these varieties can grow up to 2 metres in height so they make a eye-catching displays when sown in borders, or grow dwarf sunflowers in pots for the patio. As well as being eye-catching, they are also great at attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies into the garden.
Sow sunflower seeds from March to June for summer flowering between July to September. Germination takes around 10 to 14 days if the soil temperatures are right. After the flowers have past their best, the seeds can be harvested and eaten. Sunflower seeds are edible - the black and whte striped seeds are the best tasting - simply roast them for a healthy snack.
