Learning from Growing 20 March 2015

Wendy is a teacher delivering City and Guilds qualifications at Weston College within HMP/YOI Portland and would like to share her experiences with you all:

" Hi. My name is Wendy; I work for Weston College at HMP/YOI Portland where I deliver City and Guilds qualifications to my learners.  It's always a challenge growing crops in a coastal environment (as many experienced horticulturalists will tell you but as a result of achieving the units of the Practical Horticulture Course (Level 1 and Level 2) we produce a range of fruit, vegetables and culinary herbs.  Some of these we use for our cookery sessions (there's nothing like producing a meal from what you have grown yourself), some we pass on to local charities to enable them to raise funds for their charity, some we pass on to our local food bank. Over the next months I'd like to share with you our growing year – our successes; our 'whatever happened to those' trials and tribulations, and our 'Outstanding Learner of the Season' achievement (with a goody bag of seeds from Kings!).
