Dog Rose (Rosa canina) Perennial Shrub

The Dog Rose is a familiar and welcome sight in full flower in June. The pale to rich pink single flowers are fragrant. The stems are strong and spiky. Flowers are followed by a profusion of scarlet flask shaped hips which are very high in vitamin C and are used to make syrup and wine. These are also a fantastic treat for wildlife, especially birds.
The leaves make a fragrant tea. Habitat: hedgerows.
Hardy Perennial Shrub
Grows up to 2m, but can grow taller if given support.
Requires vernalisation to germinate - subject the seed to a cold period.

When to Sow Dog Rose Seeds

Mid May to late July.

Where to Sow

These seeds need stratification to start germination.  To obtain this, keep the seed tray warm for 2-3 weeks followed by temperatures of 2-4° C for 4-5 weeks.  Keep cool once germinated.

When to Transplant

When seedlings are large enough to handle, prick off into pots and grow on until ready for planting out.

Flowers

Pale pink to rich pink flowers will make an appearcnce in June. The scarlet hips will be produced after flowering, which are a fantastic treat for wildflife and birds!
