San Marzano are traditional long plum shaped, Italian heirloom variety grown specifically for bottling, cooking or making tomato sauces and purees, because of their deliciously dry and meaty texture. They grow to around 7cm long and have deep red skins. They grown on indeterminate vines which will require staking, and are an open polinated variety which breeds true tomatoes. They originate from a small town called San Marzano in Italy, which is where the name comes from. These tomatoes have a medium late maturity.
Reaches maturity in 16-18 weeks.

When to Sow San Marzano Tomato Seeds

January to April. Plant out April to June.

Where to Sow

Sow seeds underglass 0.5cm (1/4 in) deep in pots or trays of good seed sowing compost and lightly cover with a sprinkling of vermiculite or compost. Place containers in a propagator at a temperature of 18–21°C.

What to do Next

Prick out seedlings, once large enough to handle, into 9cm (3 1/2in) pots. Transplant to the greenhouse, in borders soil, in individual large pots, or in a grow bags with 3 plants per bag, when the tomato plants have reached  20cm (8in) high. Can also be planted outdoors once all risk of frost has past. If planting outdoors, plant in a warm sunny position with 45-60cm spaces. Plants require sideshooting and support for the best yields. Water and feed plants regularly with a high potash feed once the first truss has set.

Handy Tip

To obtain the earliest crops, grow tomatoes in a polytunnel or greenhouse. You could also try growing Basil between plants as a companion plant. Not only will the scent help deter white fly, but Basil can be used in a variety of tomato salads and dishes.
