WHEN TO SOW In April/May SOW OUTSIDE In a shallow drill. Cover lightly with soil and water well. Plant out when large enough. Prefers well drained, alkaline soil. Waterlogging over winter will kill Rue. Rue prefers full sun but will tolerate light shade. WHAT TO DO NEXT Thin or transplant to 45cm apart. Prune in late spring. Divide in Spring. Take stem cuttings in late summer. Flowers appear in summer. SOW INDOORS Rue can be grown inside in a sunny position. HARVEST Pick young leaves before the flowers start to open. Collect seeds. USES Dry leaves and seed. Infuse with lovage and mint as amarinade for partridge. HANDY TIP Muslin bags of dried rue in closets and airing cupboards will deter insects, and growing rue in the garden will help to curtail pests.
