WHEN TO SOW Sow in April into drills. Cover with fine soil and thin to 15cm apart in May. WHERE TO SOW The site should be sunny and sheltered with well-drained, rich soil. HARVEST Seeds when ripe, usually in September as the plant is dying. USES Use seeds whole or ground in cooking. Cumin is an essential ingredient for curry, and many other oriental dishes. Add to meats and pickles to add flavour. The seeds can be ground in a pepper mill. Cumin is an essential ingredient of chilli powder. HANDY TIP Sprinkle over roast vegetables to give them a kick and interesting flavour.
