Chicory  Palla Rossa Description:
Often called ”Radicchio“ in Britain. Firm hearts with red/maroon and white leaves for colour in salads. 475 PLANTS Sow the seeds thinly in the growing site 1cm deep between April and July or in seed trays or modules. Thin or transplant to 25cm spacings all round.Sow in August for transplanting in September under polythene for large winter heads. Leaves can be picked regularly after about 4 weeks or leave until mature and harvest the whole head. Leave the stump in the ground and you will get a small re-growth of young leaves.

WHEN TO SOW
Late April to July.
WHERE TO SOW
April and early May sowings in pots or trays under glass at 16-18°C. Later sowings in a fine seed bed or in shallow drills where required to grow.
WHAT TO DO NEXT
Transplant glasshouse sowings as soon as seedlings are large enough to handle. Thin out other sowings as they grow to end up with plants spaced 20cm apart.
MATURITY
Late summer through early winter.
HANDY TIP
In addition to use in salads, small hearts and leaves can be lightly cooked as a vegetable.
