Cabbage  Wheelers Imperial Description:
Dark green leafy heads, compact plants with harvest time of mid-April onwards. Has the advantage of being suitable for spring sowing for autumn use. 350 PLANTS Spring Harvesting Sow the seeds thinly in a nursery bed in July or August in rows 15cm apart at a depth of 1cm. Thin the seedlings as they grow to about 8cm apart. In September or October the young plants should have 5 or 6 leaves and be transplanted to the growing site 45cm apart all round. Firmly tread in and water thoroughly.

WHERE TO SOW   

Sow the seed thinly in a well prepared seed bed in shallow drills 1.5m (3/4”) deep. Keep well watered.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

Thin out the seedlings as they appear to 5cm (2”) apart. When the seedlings are about 10-15cm (4-6”) tall, transplant to the growing site 35-40cm (14-16”) apart. Set the young plants 2cm (1”) deeper than they were in the seed bed. Firm in well and keep watered in drought conditions.

HANDY TIP

Keep a watchful eye for caterpillars, they can turn a fine cabbage into lacework in no time at all. Cut off head leaving main central stem which will grow juicy small leaves which can be picked off.
