One of my all time favourites. Small winged pods should be harvested when about 3-4cm long, superb flavour akin to Asparagus. Will crop all summer long if picked regularly. Brilliant scarlet flowers. Needs no staking but pods camouflage well in the foliage

WHEN TO SOW
Late March to early May.
WHERE TO SOW
Early sowings from mid April direct into open site in drills 2cm deep spacing seed 5cm apart. Space rows 35cm apart or if using supports 60cm apart, or under glass in pots in early spring at 19-21°C. Germination usually 7-14 days.
WHAT TO DO NEXT
Protect seed and young seedlings from bird damage by covering with netting. Put up supports, if required as soon as seedlings emerge. Seeds sown early in pots should be harden off and planted out 30cm apart (12in) when all risk of frost in gone.
MATURITY
June to August.
HANDY TIP
To cook, just top and tail the pods and steam or lightly boil. Pick regularly to ensure continuous cropping. |
